Pastel on paper
These beautiful birds have finally started feasting at my bird table. Low to the ground, their shape is very aerodynamic as they climb up tree trunks and hunt along the underside of branches in search of insects, nuts and acorns. I am reminded of the Supermarine aircraft designed by Mitchell, (who also built the Spitfire), when he said he was inspired by watching gulls glide across waves and ride the thermals. Maybe he also saw the Nuthatch. And they weigh in at around 20g. So much colour, design and purpose in such a small bundle.
